How Prediction Market Deadlines and Cutoff Times Change What a Contract Really Means

Beginners often read prediction markets as if the market were asking a timeless question. But contracts are rarely timeless. Deadlines, cutoff times, and timing rules often change what the contract really means. A market can look obvious until you notice that the real question is narrower because of the exact date or timing boundary.

This page works as a support article beside the site’s guides on yes/no contracts, resolution criteria, and false confidence. If you still need the main basics ladder, go back to Guides.

Why timing rules matter so much

Timing rules change interpretation. A contract that sounds like “Will X happen?” often really means “Will X happen by this exact time, under this exact source rule?” That difference can completely change how the price should be read.

Three ways beginners get timing wrong

  • Ignoring the cutoff date: they read the general event, not the actual deadline.
  • Missing the source timing: they assume real-world occurrence matters more than when the official source updates.
  • Treating late evidence as if it still counts: they forget that a contract can resolve against their intuition if the evidence lands outside the timing rule.

How this creates false confidence

A market can look extremely confident because the headline feels simple, while the timing boundary is doing most of the hidden work. That is one of the fastest ways beginners mistake a narrow contract for a broad truth statement.

A better beginner habit

Before trusting the price, ask: “By when? According to what source? Under what cutoff rule?” If you cannot answer those three questions, you do not yet understand the contract well enough to trust the apparent certainty.

Where this fits in the support layer

This article sits naturally beside the site’s work on resolution criteria, yes/no contracts, and false-confidence reading. It is not a new ladder step. It is a support page for the recurring mistake of reading the event headline more broadly than the contract allows.
